BENGALURU: It was around 12.30 pm on Saturday when Majid Baig, who was driving his autorickshaw near National Games Village (NGV) in Koramangala, noticed a little girl walking on the pavement and crying aloud. Holding a cup of ice cream in hand, the panic-stricken girl kept saying ‘maa..maa’.
Baig soon sensed that the girl had gotten separated from her mother. “First I spoke in Kannada, but she knew only Hindi. I consoled her and asked a few passersby if they knew about her. After trying to trace her family for more than 15 minutes, I took her to Viveknagar police station,” Baig said.
Police too tried to locate the girl’s address but in vain. After taking her picture and details of Baig, they asked him to visit the Koramangala police station, as NGV falls under its jurisdiction.
Koramangala police shared her pictures on WhatsApp groups. Baig was asked to accompany the girl in a Hoysala vehicle to the spot where he had found her. “At NGV, cops made announcements about the missing girl. Hoping her house was somewhere near NGV, we kept moving around the area,” Baig said.
Meanwhile, the girl’s parents approached the Viveknagar police station. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, the girl’s parents are daily-wage workers and residents of Ambedkar Nagar. The mother told police that her daughter went missing when they had gone to dispose of garbage.
Viveknagar police immediately contacted Koramangala inspector KB Ravi. The parents were also sent to the station and their joy knew no bounds when they found the girl. The father hugged Baig while the teary-eyed mother thanked him for rescuing the kid. “My fear was traffic on the road. I thank god, auto bhayya, and the police for safeguarding my child,” the mother said.
A resident of Rajendranagar, Baig has two daughters. “I felt the pain when I saw the crying girl on the pavement,” he said. Deputy commissioner of police (south-east) Joshi Srinath Mahadev said four Hoysala vehicles and six Cheetah bikes were pressed into service to trace the parents of the girl.
“We had sent her picture to at least 15-20 WhatsApp groups that had residents and volunteers from nearby areas. She was reunited with the family within three hours. Majid Baig was honored at Koramangala station,” he added.
