BENGALURU: Ridoy Babu, 25, among the six people arrested in connection with the gang rape and assault of a fellow Bangladeshi national in the city, was popularly known as TikTok Hridoy Babo in Dhaka.
Babu and fellow accused Rakibul Islam Sagar, 23, were shot in the legs on Friday when they attacked police who had taken them to the Kanakanagar area in Ramamurthynagar, off Old Madras Road, for a spot mahazar. Babu, Sagar, and four others, including two women, were arrested on Thursday night for raping and assaulting a woman.
A video of the assault had gone viral in Bangladesh and northeast India. All the arrested are Bangladeshi nationals who trafficked women from their country for running prostitution rackets in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kozhikode.
According to police, Babu’s real name is Rifadul Islam and he had many aliases, including Ridoy Babu and Hriday Babo. Police learned that Ridoy used to shoot short videos and upload them on video-sharing platforms. He would befriend women in the name of making videos and then take them to various locations for shooting.
Ramamurthy Nagar police have named Ridoy as accused no.1 in the case. “We learned that Ridoy had shot videos with girls and uploaded them on an online platform and gained popularity in Bangladesh. He misused his popularity and supplied women to the traffickers by promising jobs in Bengaluru and other cities. Ridoy is being treated in hospital and we’ll question him in detail to know his role in human trafficking and the rape case,” an officer said.
The survivor, who had fled to Kerala after the assault, has been brought back to the city.
