Five-year-old Avin Akkai Padmashali, the son of transgender human rights activist Akkai Padmashali, has received a passport from the Bengaluru Regional Passport Office in a historic decision that omits the father's name. When a transgender woman's name is included as the parent on a child's passport, it is a historic moment in India.
The sole custody of their adopted son, Avin, has been awarded to Akkai Padmashali, who was granted a divorce from her cisgender spouse, Vasudev V. This ruling is a big step forward, Akkai said in an interview with Deccan Herald, underscoring the difficulties a divorced, single-parent transwoman faces. She informed DH that the government has taken a significant step and acknowledged these difficulties.
In 2019, Akkai and Vasudev, who were wed in 2017 and legally wed in 2018, adopted a son. Additionally, Akkai is the first transgender lady in India to have a legally recognized marriage. The new passport, which does not include the father's name, is regarded as a step forward in the nation's acceptance of transgender parents' identities and rights.
