Elderly Couple Dies by Suicide After Losing ₹50 Lakh to Cyber Fraud in Karnataka

An elderly couple in Khanapur taluk, Belagavi district, Karnataka, died by suicide after losing ₹50 lakh to cyber fraud and facing alleged harassment. The incident came to light on Thursday when neighbors discovered Flaviana lifeless on the bed, while her husband, Diogjeron, was found in their underground water tank.

Diogjeron, a retired Maharashtra government secretariat employee, died by stabbing himself in the neck, with additional injuries on his wrist. Flaviana is suspected to have consumed poison, though confirmation awaits the autopsy report.

A two-page handwritten death note left by Diogjeron stated their decision to end their lives and requested that no one be blamed, as they did not want to live at the mercy of others. However, the note mentioned two individuals—Sumit Birra and Anil Yadav—as the perpetrators of the fraud.

According to the note, Birra posed as a telecom department official from New Delhi and claimed that a SIM card had been fraudulently purchased in Diogjeron’s name, being misused for harassment and illegal advertisements. Birra then transferred the call to Yadav, who pretended to be from the Crime Branch.

Yadav allegedly threatened Diogjeron with legal consequences unless he provided details of his property and finances. Under pressure, Diogjeron lost ₹50 lakh to the scammers. Unable to cope with the financial loss and distress, the elderly couple took their own lives.

The police are investigating the case, examining the death note, and verifying the identities of the accused individuals. The tragic incident highlights the growing menace of cyber fraud and its devastating impact on victims.
