Karnataka Woman Brutally Attacked by Husband and Associates Over Suspicions of Infidelity
Davanagere, Karnataka – April 2025:
A horrifying incident from Tavarekere village in Channagiri taluk, about 250 km from Bengaluru, has shocked the state and the nation alike. A 38-year-old woman, Shabinabanu Kom Jameel Ahmed—also known as Shameer—was violently assaulted in broad daylight by her husband and a group of men wielding hammers and iron pipes.
The attack occurred on April 9, 2025, around 2:30 PM, outside the Jamia Masjid in Tavarekere. A video of the incident, which surfaced on social media and quickly went viral, captured the harrowing moments of the woman being mercilessly beaten. The footage led to swift outrage and action by the Davanagere police, who confirmed the intent behind the attack was to kill her.
According to police reports, the violence was triggered by the victim's husband, Jamil Ahmed, who grew suspicious after two male relatives—Nasreen Kom Rafiq (32) and a man named Fayyaz—visited their home. Enraged, Ahmed escalated the matter by presenting a petition at the local mosque before orchestrating the brutal public assault.
Following the attack, Shabinabanu filed a police complaint on April 11, leading to a case being registered at the Channagiri police station. Authorities invoked multiple serious sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections related to criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and assault.
Davanagere Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth and senior officers promptly formed a special investigation team. Within hours of registering the case, six key suspects were apprehended. The accused, all residents of Tavarekere, were identified as:
-
Mohammed Nayaz (32): Driver
-
Mohammed Gauspir (45): Shopkeeper
-
Chandabhasha (35): Sugarcane juice seller
-
Inayat Ullah (51)
-
Dastgir (24): Bike mechanic
-
Rasool TR (42): Fisherman at Bukkumbudi lake
The case has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed conversations around gender-based violence and vigilante justice in rural areas. Officials have assured that justice will be delivered swiftly, and that such acts of mob brutality will not be tolerated.
As the investigation continues, women's rights groups have called for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women and more robust community awareness against patriarchal violence masked as “honour.”
