Bengaluru, often known for its pleasant weather, was caught off guard by a sudden thundershower that swept across the city on Thursday evening. The brief but intense spell of rain brought along strong winds, toppling trees and leaving roads waterlogged — a tragic reminder of how even short bursts of rain can turn deadly in urban areas.

Tragically, the downpour claimed the life of an auto-rickshaw driver near Kathriguppe, where a massive tree collapsed under pressure from the gusty winds, crushing his vehicle. The incident occurred near a bus shelter, at a time when commuters were scrambling for cover, and highlights the increasing vulnerability of city infrastructure during such events.

Interestingly, the city recorded only 20 mm of rainfall — a number that might seem negligible. Yet, this "mild" rainfall was supercharged by localized thunderstorms and strong winds, as explained by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Meteorologists pointed to the convergence of moisture from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea as a key trigger for this unstable weather pattern.

Out of Bengaluru’s 243 wards, 111 experienced rainfall — a significant spread for what was essentially a short evening shower. The rain also caused a noticeable dip in temperatures, dropping the mercury by nearly 2°C in central regions, providing temporary relief from the heat, but at a heavy cost.

Waterlogged roads and fallen trees have once again exposed the city’s struggle with urban planning and stormwater management. With climate patterns growing increasingly unpredictable, such events are likely to become more frequent. It raises an urgent question — is Bengaluru prepared for the changing nature of urban monsoons?
