Bengaluru’s Lakes Overflow After Torrential Rains: 60+ Water Bodies at Full Capacity, Flood Fears Loom
Bengaluru is grappling with the aftermath of intense and nearly record-breaking rainfall, as more than 60 of the city’s lakes have swelled to full capacity. Over the past week, the city has witnessed heavy downpours that have left at least 63 lakes brimming, with several more on the verge of overflowing.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has raised alarms, confirming that out of the 183 lakes under its care, 40 are nearing their maximum capacity. Authorities are particularly concerned about low-lying areas, which face an increased risk of flooding if the rains continue.
According to the BBMP Lakes Department, the heaviest impact has been recorded in Mahadevapura, Yelahanka, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and Bommanahalli. These zones alone account for the majority of the full lakes—13 in Mahadevapura, 19 in Yelahanka, 16 in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and 7 in Bommanahalli.
In response, BBMP officials have launched cleanup operations around several affected lakes. The efforts include clearing lake bunds and removing debris such as garbage, plastic waste, sticks, and other materials swept in by the rains. These initiatives aim to reduce the risk of blockages and ensure smoother water flow, thereby preventing possible overflows and maintaining ecological stability.
As the monsoon continues to lash the city, residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain cautious. With more rains expected, civic agencies remain on high alert, monitoring lake levels and flood-prone zones across Bengaluru.
Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
