India Launches 'Operation Sindoor' as Tensions Flare Along LoC; Three Civilians Killed in Pakistani Shelling

May 7, 2025 — New Delhi / Poonch / Rajouri

In a major development on Wednesday, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, a series of precise military strikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, which has seen a surge in cross-border hostilities over recent weeks.

According to a government press release, the strikes were focused and aimed solely at dismantling terror bases. “No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted,” the release clarified, reinforcing India's claim that the operation was purely counter-terror in nature.

The Ministry of Defence stated via social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that nine terrorist infrastructure sites were hit. “Focused strikes were carried out on nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, targeting the roots of cross-border terror planning,” the statement said. The attacks are being viewed as a response to the increasing infiltration attempts and terror activities originating from across the border.

In retaliation, the Pakistani Army resorted to intense mortar shelling along the Line of Control (LoC), targeting forward villages in Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Officials confirmed that areas such as Krishna Ghati, Shahpur, and Mankote in Poonch, and Laam, Manjakote, and Gambeer Brahmana in Rajouri came under heavy fire. Tragically, three civilians lost their lives during the shelling, with several others reportedly injured.

The renewed hostilities have sparked concerns among residents living in border areas. Panic gripped several villages as families sought shelter in underground bunkers and abandoned homes for safer locations. Security forces have been deployed in full strength, and relief measures are being coordinated by local administration.

In anticipation of further escalation, the Union Home Ministry has ramped up efforts to strengthen civil defence mechanisms. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday, May 6, to assess preparedness. Among the key decisions taken were conducting mock drills involving air-raid warning sirens, training civilians in emergency response protocols, and refurbishing existing bunkers and trenches. These steps are aimed at ensuring the safety of residents in vulnerable border regions.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened closed-door consultations to discuss the rising tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours. Though no formal statement was released following the meeting, diplomats reportedly urged both sides to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue.

Pakistan, following the UNSC meeting, claimed that its objectives at the forum were “largely served,” without providing specific details. India's diplomatic channels, meanwhile, remain active. According to the Indian Embassy in Washington, India briefed U.S. officials shortly after launching Operation Sindoor, underlining the focused and counter-terrorism-driven nature of the strikes.

Analysts suggest that Operation Sindoor may represent a shift in India’s approach to cross-border terrorism—one that favors swift and targeted action over prolonged engagement. However, the operation also raises the spectre of broader escalation, especially as Pakistan continues to retaliate through artillery shelling along the LoC.

The situation remains tense, with both military and diplomatic efforts underway to prevent further deterioration. Civilian populations in border areas continue to bear the brunt of hostilities, highlighting the urgent need for de-escalation and peace-building initiatives between the two nations.

As of now, India maintains that it reserves the right to defend itself against terrorism emanating from across its borders. The coming days will be critical in determining whether this latest flare-up leads to broader conflict or a renewed push for dialogue and resolution.
