Karnataka Ramps Up Covid Precautions Amid Fresh Cases: Health Minister Assures Vigilance, No Cause for Panic
Bengaluru, May 26, 2025 — In response to a slight uptick in COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, the state government is intensifying its precautionary measures while urging citizens to remain calm and not succumb to panic. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao confirmed that testing has been ramped up, especially among vulnerable groups, and that the state is closely monitoring developments.
The move comes after the recent death of an 84-year-old man in Bengaluru, who had tested positive for COVID-19. The patient reportedly had multiple severe comorbidities, including a year-long bedridden condition, a hip replacement, heart issues, and tuberculosis. "We cannot say directly that he died because of COVID only," Minister Rao stated, adding that a medical audit has been initiated to determine the exact cause of death.
Currently, Karnataka has reported 38 active COVID-19 cases, with 32 in Bengaluru alone. While the numbers remain low, the government is taking no chances. "We have asked our department officials to conduct RT-PCR tests, especially in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and Influenza-Like Illness (ILI), particularly among the elderly and children," the minister said.
Testing kits have already been dispatched across the state, and both government and private hospitals have been instructed to conduct tests wherever symptoms are observed. Rao also noted that technical advisory committee meetings will now be held weekly to assess the evolving situation and guide decision-making.
Emphasizing preparedness over panic, Rao reassured that the situation does not currently warrant any restrictions or lockdowns. "There is no question of negligence. All necessary steps are being taken in consultation with experts and central authorities," he said.
Responding to concerns about rising cases in neighboring Kerala, the minister said any decisions regarding interstate movement or restrictions will be made in coordination with the central government, based on comprehensive data from all states.
Rao concluded by stressing that most COVID-positive patients are recovering well and that Karnataka remains committed to taking all necessary actions to safeguard public health without causing undue alarm.
For now, the state's strategy hinges on proactive testing, continuous surveillance, and coordination with national health agencies — a balanced approach to manage the situation without disrupting daily life.
