The Bengaluru City Police have started bringing legal action against merchants who have been using internet platforms to promote, sell, and distribute non-green crackers in response to directives from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB).
A merchant has been charged by the Bandepalya Police with selling the prohibited non-green crackers online through the website bookcrackers.com. The proprietor of Shivananda Stores has been using the internet to promote the sale of a range of crackers.
The accused was charged under both the Explosives Act of 1884 and Section 287 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita of 2023, which deals with careless behavior involving fire or combustible materials. From October 31 to November 2, the KSPCB has permitted the bursting of only green crackers between 8 and 10 p.m. All non-green crackers are prohibited from being manufactured, stocked, or sold in the state.
Nonetheless, non-green crackers have been advertised and delivered by a number of internet platforms. PACT, The Compassionate City, and the Namma Bengaluru Foundation were among the citizen organizations that petitioned Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh on the subject. The KSPCB then issued a second order that made it clear that selling non-green crackers and advertising online were prohibited as well, and instructed the city police to file a report.
