Relentless Rains Batter Coastal and Malnad Karnataka: Floods, Accidents, and Disruptions Reported

May 26, 2025 – Mangaluru/Chikkamagaluru:
Incessant rainfall has thrown life out of gear across parts of coastal and Malnad Karnataka, particularly in Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts. Over the past 24 hours, the region has witnessed a series of rain-related disruptions, ranging from road blockages and flooding to treefalls and minor accidents, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Rising Water Levels and Flooding

The heavy downpour has led to a surge in water levels in key rivers such as the Netravati, resulting in the flooding of nearby agricultural fields. In Kayartodi village of Belthangady taluk, floodwaters from the overflowing river inundated an areca nut plantation, submerging large portions of farmland.

Waterlogging was also reported in several parts of Mangaluru city. The Pumpwell area saw significant disruptions after a stormwater canal overflowed, flooding the underpass near the Pumpwell flyover and halting vehicular movement for several hours.

Accidents and Injuries

The harsh weather conditions have led to a number of accidents. In Puttur, a woman sustained injuries when a partially demolished wall near the Mahalingeshwara Temple collapsed during a spell of intense rain. The remaining portion of the old building, left unattended, could not withstand the downpour.

Near Nujibalthila, close to Kadaba, four individuals—including a child—were injured when a tree crashed onto their moving car. The family was en route from Kukke Subrahmanya to Dharmasthala when the incident occurred. Quick-thinking locals rushed to their aid and transported them to a nearby hospital. Their car, however, was badly damaged.

In Chikkamagaluru district, a tourist vehicle veered off the rain-slick road and plunged into a stream near Chakkamakki village in Mudigere taluk. Officials cited poor visibility and slippery conditions as the cause. Fortunately, all occupants escaped with minor injuries thanks to the timely intervention of a local resident who used a rope to rescue them from the water.

Udupi District Also Affected

Udupi district is also bearing the brunt of the monsoon’s fury, with continuous rainfall reported since early Sunday. Authorities are keeping a close watch on vulnerable areas and have warned residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

IMD Issues Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cautionary advisory for fishermen, urging them not to venture into the sea due to turbulent weather and high waves. More rainfall is predicted for the coming days, and district disaster management teams are on high alert.

As the monsoon tightens its grip on the coastal belt and Western Ghats, residents are advised to exercise caution, especially while travelling or venturing near rivers and vulnerable structures.
