Cricket Match Dispute Turns Fatal in Karnataka: One Dead, 15 Arrested
A friendly cricket game in Kudupu village, located on the outskirts of Mangaluru city, took a deadly turn on April 27 when a man was brutally beaten to death by a mob of over 25 individuals following a dispute. The violent episode unfolded around 3 p.m. near the Bhatra Kallurti temple, according to police sources.
The unidentified victim sustained severe internal injuries after being assaulted with sticks by the mob. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to a hospital. Initial police reports treated the incident as an unnatural death. However, a post-mortem conducted on April 28 confirmed multiple blunt force injuries as the cause of death.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal addressed the media, revealing that the case has been registered under Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This provision deals with murder involving five or more assailants and carries strict penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty.
The primary accused, identified as Sachin from Kudupu, is already in police custody. So far, authorities have arrested 15 suspects, with efforts underway to trace at least 10 more individuals believed to be involved. Investigators are currently analyzing CCTV footage and mobile phone data to piece together the sequence of events.
Dakshina Kannada District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao expressed his outrage on social media platform X, condemning the act and urging for calm. He revealed that the altercation began as a verbal argument between players and a young man from another community, which escalated into deadly violence.
Calling the incident a threat to communal peace, Rao instructed law enforcement to act decisively and ensure justice is served. He also appealed to citizens to avoid spreading or believing in rumors and to uphold communal harmony during this sensitive time.
